About Us
Greater Westside Development Corporation (GWDC) is a not-for-profit 501© 3 community based program organized in 1981 initially providing Economic Development to the residents of the Lawndale Community Area. It has since grown to collaborate with Exodus Drum and Bugle Corp. to help prevent and divert school aged youth from becoming involved in the juvenile justice system. In order to help parents keep a safety net over the youth they were allowed to participate in after school programming that involved tutoring, mentoring, drum and bugle, computer training and other culturally specific activities.
In July 2002 without funding, GWDC began to provide services in the area of HIV/AIDS which included participation in prevention education workshops, community health fairs and prevention case management to community individuals that were seeking services or just needed to connect with someone to get a referral and/or help increase their awareness. We were also able to sponsor with other community based organizations local programs for National HIV Testing Week, Black Church Week of Prayer and World AIDS Day. However, in 2002 we were only able to present a Gospel Concert with local artist at the Stone Temple Baptist Church for World AIDS Day. In July 2003 we received funding from Illinois Department of Public Health to institute our Youth Peer Health Education program. We also received a grant for capacity building which is what has brought us through to 2005. We continued to provide the services as stated above including collaboration with other programs to provide counseling and testing during National HIV Testing Week, June 2004. The Greater Westside Development Corporation was also successful in sponsoring a TEST OUT and HEALTH FAIR program for World AIDS Day 2004 to increase awareness of HIV/AIDS targeting, “the community”. This event was also very successful and highlighted Congressman Danny K. Davis on local television participating in Oraquick HIV testing |
